Math Quiz: Mon, Sep 26th

Our math quiz on Monday will be covering concepts we have explored in math so far this year: operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and calculating rates.

Go on a hunt for clue words

  • To solve a math problem, it is necessary to read it carefully for "clue words." These are words that help readers identify what operations to choose. Students can hunt for clue words found in word problems.
The following words indicate addition: in all; together; altogether; total; both.
These words show that subtraction is required: how much more; how much less; how many more; left; remain; difference.
Multiplication clue words include: of and for (a total of 16 tickets for $3 each); how many in (If you read 50 words in 1 minute, how many will you read in 5 minutes?); at (How much will 5 hot dogs cost at $5 each?).
These phrases imply division: how much did each; how many times; how many groups of; into how many.

One tool for breaking down a word problem
"Read, plan, do" is a planning process for math problems. Students determine:

    1) what information is important in a problem (actually highlight or underline the information in the question)
    2) what they need to do with it (re-write in simple terms)
    3) what order of operations to follow (number the steps)
