Today in class, we looked at the results of calculating our own food footprints and came up with this procedure. This isn't the only way to do it, but it's a way we know will get an accurate result.
1. Total any items on the receipt that are not food or items you know for certain that you do not eat.
2. Calculate the tax on the items you are going to remove by multiplying the total by 1.13
3. Subtract the after-result (the items to be removed including tax) from the total of the receipts.
4. Figure out how long the food on the receipts lasted (e.g. 1 week, 2 weeks, etc). Multiply to find out the monthly cost.
5. Divide the result by the number of consumers (people sharing that food).
6. Calculate your monthly "luxury expenses". Add this to your individual total.
