Math Quiz on Monday: Mean, Median, Mode and "Reverse Mode"

For your math test on Monday, review the problems you've solved in your notebook, as well as your POW from last week. There are also two SolutionCasts posted here by Alastair and another by Adam and Jordan which go through the process of determining factors used to calculate a mean.

I've also posted a video from Khan Academy that gives an interesting explanation of how an "outlier" can skew (throw-off) a calculation of mean and make the average seem quite different from what is often achieved.

Here are a few activities you can use to practice for the quiz.

1. Collect the ages of everyone (humans) living in your household. Calculate the mean, median, and mode of these numbers. Which one of these presents the most accurate "average" age of people in the house? Which one shows what the largest age group is?

2. The score in Room 103 on our recent nuclear physics examination was 73. There are 21 students in the class. 3 students were absent on the day of the test and have not yet written it. Determine a class set of scores that would result in a mean score for the class of 73.
